Martha Wells

Everyone’s favorite lethal SecUnit is back in the next installment of Martha Wells’ bestselling and award-winning Murderbot Diaries series.

Having someone else support your bad decision feels kind of good.

After volunteering to run a rescue mission, Murderbot realizes that it will have to spend significant time with a bunch of humans it doesn’t know.

Including human children. Ugh.

This may well call for … eye contact!

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Back in 2018 I was introduced to The Murderbot Diaries. I was volunteering at a student run radio program called The Weekly Reader on KMSU, Mankato. I devoured the books and immediately jumped at talking with Martha Wells. I actually got to chat with her then, although the interview was awkward and I was a so awed when I spoke to her that I was a little odd, lol. It’s funny to look back at those days and see how I’ve changed.

I’m not the only one that has changed since Exit Strategy. Murderbot has grown so much over the last four books! Platform Decay has Murderbot actually acknowledging that it needs to get some help for it’s PTSD, taking care of children, and going full uncle mode on the “road” trip from hell.

It should be apparent that I loved this book. Murderbot is one of my favorite science fiction stories, not just because Murderbot is an interesting character that is hilariously awkward, but because there is so much under the surface of the story. There is commentary on corporate control, mental health awareness, and resource control through a governing body (which is also the corporation). Non-societal, or rather more personal, threads throughout all the books include self discovery, exploring non-traditional relationships, non-traditional families, and adult friendships.

Just go read The Murderbot Diaries. Go. Now.

….or watch Murderbot on AppleTV+. Alexander Skarsgård is a fantastic Murderbot!
